I’ve posted several images now of Rainbow Lorikeets’ so apologies for yet another one, but they are regulars to the garden, and I haven’t had the time of late to get out and shoot something new.

Rainbow Lorikeets are unmistakable with its bright red beak and colourful plumage. Both sexes look alike, with a blue (mauve) head and belly, green wings, tail and back, and an orange/yellow breast. They are often seen in loud and fast-moving flocks, or in communal roosts at dusk.

They are such colourful parrots that it is hard to mistake them for other species. The related Scaly-breasted Lorikeet is similar in size and shape, but can be distinguished by its all-green head and body.

It is found in a wide range of treed habitats including rainforest and woodlands, as well as in well-treed urban areas. Largely sedentary, with some nomadic movements in response to seasonal flowering or fruiting of plants.

It mostly forages on the flowers of shrubs or trees to harvest nectar and pollen, but also eats fruits, seeds and some insects.

The eggs of the Rainbow Lorikeet are laid on chewed, decayed wood, usually in a hollow limb of a eucalypt tree. Both sexes prepare the nest cavity and feed the young, but only the female incubates the eggs.

They appear to have benefited from artificial feeding stations and prolific-fruiting and flowering trees and shrubs, and has acclimatized well to urbanisation and is commonly encountered in well-treed suburbs.

Details; Shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, cropped slightly and re-sized, also re-sharpened for posting.

No apologies needed. We all know how hard it is to get out sometimes....one needs both time AND to be motivated...otherwise it doeskin work out so well...but your bird garden shots are delightful...If I said colourful then someone would call me...but they are:-)

Hallo Richard
Sufficient time is a problem at the moment, but looking at the thumbnails on the gallery, the vivid colours on your image caught my eye and I had to open the image. I am glad I did, as this is a lovely image with striking details. What a sunny and joyful sight this must have been in real, as for me on this side of the world it was a sheer pleasure. I like the image as a whole, as it is colourful, bright and actually very friendly. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Anna

My encounter with lorikets were in Netherlands Avifauna, and i bet they are one of the most beautiful and daring birds. You have managed to capture one here feeding on a yellow flower and it is beautiful.
If i have to pick nits , then its the BG, the highlights is bit too much there , but i guess in such situation you cant really help.

Hello Rick,
Delightful shot of the Rainbow Lorikeet taken with fine colours, sharpness and lighting. I like the dorsal POV showing the wonderful green plumage of the back. The flowers that it is feeding on are well portrayed too. Are they Grevillea or Callistemon?
Thanks and all the best,
Cheers,
Ivan
