My wife and I took a trip up to O’reillys via the Vineyard yesterday "as you do" and it’s been about two years since we were last up there. I managed to catch this Regent Bowerbird fence sitting, most of the birds are fairly tame, and are very use to being around tourists.

I did post a Previous version a couple of years ago showing both male and female Bowerbirds in-flight.

The male bird is glossy jet black with bright gold on its head, nape and wings. The male's bill and eye are yellow. The female is brown-black, mottled brown, with light brown scallops on its back and breast. There are dark patches on the back of its head and on the lower nape.

The immature male is similar to the female on its underparts and to the male on its upper parts i.e. head back and wings (except the primary feathers which are brown). The male's tail is shorter than that of the female or immature birds. Male Regent Bowerbirds' eyes become yellow in the second year.

It is found in south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales, on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, particularly rainforest and densely treed gullies.

They are mainly sedentary, with some local winter movement, including from higher altitudes towards the coast. Large groups, typically of brown birds (the females and immatures), may congregate in winter.

The male Regent Bowerbird, in common with all male bowerbirds, builds and maintains a bower at which it mates with several females. The male does not participate in nest building nor feeding the young.

The bower is a small open 'avenue type', which means it is not attached at the top. It consists of twigs and is 15 cm - 20 cm long and 30 cm high. The actual nest, constructed by the female, is a shallow saucer of twigs and leaves, lined with leaves. It is often placed in a clump of mistletoe or a thin fork. The nest may be well away from the male's bower. Only the female incubates and cares for the young.

Details; Shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, re-sized and re-sharpened for posting.

Hi Rick,

Wish I had seen a Regent Bowerbird when I was in Queensland!! He is strikingly beautiful with brilliant yellow and golds combined with the black. A fantastic job on the blacks and marvelous details of the face, eye, plumage and wings. You captured him in a wonderful pose showing him off very well.

Jane

An unseen bird for me, Richard.
It has the most unusual colour combination, but it is elegant and charming.
You have captured this bird with great skill.
Well done and thanks.

Hallo Richard
The colours captured on this bird are absolutely a feast to the eye. It is striking and vivid.
This is indeed a beautiful bird with prominent features that cannot be missed and display well. The 4 colours of yellow in contrast with the black are splendid. Your image is well focused and super sharp. Thanks for sharing this lovely image that reminds me once again how unique the Creation is. No 2 things is the same. One think you have seen the most beautiful, just to discover there are still lots of more beautiful creatures that you have not seen before. Best regards.

Hello Rick,
What a superb capture of this wonderful bird!
The contrasts of the black with the intense yellows is managed by spot-on exposure which you have achieved here. I tried the Regent Bower bird with my old compact and the colours just flowed! Perhaps we can try again, who knows!
Great sharpness, POV and composition too.
Thanks and all the best,
Cheers,
Ivan

p.s. i loved your in-flight photo and i am going there now

Hi Rick, this is a very excellent shot of this Regent Bowerbird. I never saw one of these guys while I was over, so I'll have to settle for shots from yourself. This is very well done, with excellent positioning and capture of the detail, even in the darker shadow regions. You've handled the light very well. I love that eye. If birds could speak, I wonder what he'd be saying to the photographer now. Maybe the eye says it all. Very nice.

Thanks, John
