Although black swans can be found throughout Australia, this graceful bird has a special meaning to many generations of Western Australians and was officially proclaimed as Western Australia's bird emblem on 25 July 1973. At the beautiful Swan River in Perth, sighting of black swans are known to be quite common, even though I think the numbers are descreasing.
Their history and existence on Australian territories stretch far back to a famous Aboriginal folklore that tells how the family ancestors of a section of the Bibbulman tribe of Western Australia were black swans who had been changed into men. |
