Other common names for Echidna includes Spiny Anteater or Native Porcupine.
Echidna are one of the two Monotremes (Monotremes are the most primitive mammals and live only in Australia and New Guinea.) that still exist today. The other one is the Platypus.
These unusual mammals lay eggs, and when the young Echidna hatches, it is carried in the mother's pouch until its spines grow. Fascinatingly, Echidna mothers nourish their young with milk. Baby Echidna can be called puggles. You can read more like I did from Peggy Rismiller's book titled THE EDHIDNA: AUSTRALIA'S ENIGMA at http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/088363788X/ref=sib_rdr_zmout/104-9591686-7160762?%5Fencoding=UTF8&p=S005#reader-page
Facts: The name Monotreme means "one-holed," referring to the cloaca, a single hole that serves the urinary tract, anus, and reproductive tract in Monotremes. |

Nice to see one of AUS's more unique animals, It looks like either the camera focused on the ground, or was the beastie moving at speed? as the spines look slightly OOF, it would also of been nice to see the rest of it.

Hi Joanne
Very unusual POV of this poisonous, egglaying, pauch carrying "mammal", one on my wishlist to see for more than 40 years!
Great perspective of this fascinating mammal. There is a bit of a 3D-feel to the composition that keeps the viewer looking longer.
