White-faced Heron


Egretta novaehollandiae
Description
The White-faced Heron is mostly light blue-grey in colour, with a characteristic white face. In flight, the dark flight feathers of the wing contrast with the paler grey plumage, making this bird easily identifiable when viewed from below. It has a long, slim neck and a pointed grey-black bill. The legs are long and dull yellow in colour. Sexes are similar. When breeding, the birds have long feathers (nuptial plumes) on the head, neck and back. The White-faced Heron has a slow bouncing flight.
Young White-faced Herons are similar in appearance to the non-breeding adults (no nuptial plumes), but are duller, with little or no white on the face. They often have a reddish colour on the underparts.
Distribution and Habitat
White-faced Herons are the most commonly seen herons in Australia. They are found throughout the mainland and Tasmania, and most coastal islands. They also occur in Indonesia, New Guinea, New Caledonia and New Zealand. White-faced Herons can be found anywhere where there is water, from tidal mudflats and coastal reefs to moist grasslands and gardens.
Food and Feeding
The White-faced Heron feeds on a wide variety of prey, including fish, insects and amphibians. Food is obtained in a variety of ways, such as walking and disturbing prey, searching among damp crevices or simply standing in the water and watching for movement.

An excellent photo, of this white-faced heron, capturing a twig!

I very much like the ripples in the water at his feet.

Sharp and lovely details, colors, and pose.

The chain holding back the alligator would be my only nit... :-)

Le héron se tenant sur un petit bout de rocher se tenant avec fermeté à sa petite branche de salut...
J'aurais personnelement coupé la section gauche de la photo afin d'éliminer la chaîne en arrière-plan.

Una pregunta Toni, ¿que distribución tiene esta pajaro?. Aqui en el delta del Llobregat o el delta del Ebro nunca lo he visto, tampoco en Los Aigüamolls de L´Empordá. ¿Donde lo has fotografiado?, un dia de estos me pasaré ha verte y te pediré que me enseñes donde puedo fotografiarlo ;). Es precioso :D. Por ponerte un pequeño pero... el encuadre, bajo mi modesto punto de vista crei que unoi vertical hubiera sido lo suyo ;). El foco una maravilla, inmejorable :D, un gran trabajo Toni. Te felicito :D.

Besides the great composition, colour and moment captured, what I like most is the clarity of this shot.

Not Egretta novaehollandiae. This is Pied Heron (Ardea picata).

Another new heron for me like colors pose of bird could be a bit sharperWhen shooting herons try to get reflection if possible thats only my opinion good shot
