Common Name: Eclectus Parrots

Scientific Name: Eclectus roratus + 9 sub species

Life span: Estimated 30 - 50 + years this is because Eclectus have not been in the hands of Aviculturists for as long as your typical Sulphur crested cockatoo.

Body Size:

Male: 30-36 cm Female:32-38 cm

Body Weights:

Male: 420 g approx Female: 420 g Approx

Sexing:

When birds are at a mature age they are sexually dimorphic, meaning that both sexes can be easily seen determined by a visual glance.

Male: Is totally different from the Female in colouring. The head, neck, wings, outer tail feathers, rump, chest and lower abdomen are all a bright florescent emerald green. The shoulders contain light blue feathers and the flight feathers are light blue, and then changing to a dark navy blue. These 2 shades of blue can only be seen once the electus parrot extends his wings out. Under the wings and on the sides of the body are a scarlet red. The underside of the tail and flight feathers are black as well as the feet and nails. The beak has a orangey red colour Maxilla and a black mandible. Males obtain this colouration of the beak between 10-12 months. The eyes have a black pupil with a orangey ring around the pupil. The male can also be sexed at approx 37 days where feather colouring can be seen.

Female: Most probably the most stunning of the pair in colouration is the hen. With a Bright scarlet red head, neck, and halfway down the body on the chest. The wings and outer tail feathers are a slightly darker blood red, while the underside of the tail feathers is a reddish orange in colour. From where the red finishes across halfway on the body a stunning dark fluorescent blue can be seen extending to its vent. This same colour blue can also be seen on the top of the birds shoulders extending across the back of the neck and the flight feathers and around the eyes. The beak will turn a shiny black, while the feet and nails stay black in colour. As with the male the hen can be sexed at approx 37 days where feather colouring can be seen.

Young birds: As mentioned above young birds can be sexed as early as 37 days where if green pin feathers are seen it will be a male, and red pin feathers it will be a female. The beak will also change colour as the bird ages to orangey red in males, or the black for the females. The only other changes that will happen as the bird matures will be the ring around the eyes.
