Giant Tree Frog or White-lipped Tree Frog – Litoria infrafrenata
During our first night at a wildlife lodge in North Queensland our sleep was disturbed by the barking of a large dog. We felt rather annoyed about this, but in the morning we found out that the barking came from the world’s largest Tree frog!! Later in the morning we found him hiding in a large pot of parsley in the grounds!
These beautiful frogs are found in the rainforest as well as in cultivated areas and sometimes they inhabit houses, sheds and garages. They can reach a size of about 14 cm in length! On humid evenings they go out hunting. and their mating call is just lika a dog's bark. If threatened they sound like a cat in distress!
They are also found in Papua New Guinea but occasionally they slip into banana boxes and are transported to other parts of the world. |
