[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
“The Catch” is chapter 3 in this visual story of this Laughing Kookaburra.
Chapter 1, “The Hunt” can be seen here .
Chapter 2, “The Dive” can be seen here .
Chapter 4, “The Presentation” can be seen here .

Following his dive this guy disappeared behind some bushes. I couldn’t see him and didn’t want to disturb him so I waited. It wasn’t long before he returned to a lower branch on the tree he had been on, with his prize. He shook this mouse very violently and bashed it against the tree limb for several minutes. Reading the literature, I now understand this is common. They will do this to kill and break up all of its bones, so they can digest their prey; (from http://teachit.acreekps.vic.edu.au/animals/kookaburra.htm )

This and the other three shots in this series were shot hand held, with a doubler on the lens. The lens has VR (vibration reduction) which I think helped. Post processing for this shot included: adjustments for shadows and highlights, some levels adjustments, a slight adjustment to contrast (up), cropping for this post, and sharpening for this post.

Wow! That seems to be a fine meal!
The moment is very well captured, and I assume the mouse is dead here...
