Captured in Australia, somewhere between Victoria and New South Wales 2004. It was me and my relative Tom driving a round with his car in area from Victoria and south part of New South Wales and to the southeast pat of Australian continent. This is a post of Powerful Owl captured somewhere out there.
20D @ 560mm, handheld no flash. Photo was really dark from the beginning and I decided to keep same atmosphere and not make it lighter. It looks rally nice on my calibrated screen @ work.

The Powerful Owl is a large owl with a relatively small head and a rounded tail. It is dark grey to dark grey-brown above, with white barring, and off-white below, with distinctive dark v-shaped chevrons. The eyes are yellow, set in a dark grey/brown facial mask. The legs are feathered and the yellow to orange feet are massive, with sharp talons. The sexes are alike but the female is smaller, with a narrower head. Juvenile birds are downy white on the head and underparts, the underparts are sparsely streaked, and they have much shorter tails than the adults. Powerful Owls are the largest of the Australian nocturnal birds (night birds).

The Powerful Owl is endemic to eastern and south-eastern Australia, mainly on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, from south-eastern Queensland to Victoria.

The Powerful Owl is found in open forests and woodlands, as well as along sheltered gullies in wet forests with dense understoreys, especially along watercourses. Will sometimes be found in open areas near forests such as farmland, parks and suburban areas, as well as in remnant bushland patches. Needs old growth trees to nest.

Hej Ralf,
This is a fine shot of a species of owl that we missed when we were in OZ. You captured it sharply and present it well despite the low light.
You were lucky to see it!

Hello Ralf,
Look powerful with that body and claws. Very nice picture in natural settings and atmosphere. Congratulations,
JC

Good you kept the atmosphere in its original way, Ralf.
560 mm? I see you used a 100-400. I guess you muliplied it by the 20D factor? What is the latter?
Very moody image.
Never saw this owl; it has a large beak for an owl.

Bonjour,
Voilà un oiseau qui semble bien paré pour lutter contre le froid.

Hej Ralf,
What a weird Owl with a very strange beak and small eyes!! It doesn't mean he is not terrific and your shot is brilliant. Very fine details in spite of the low light. You've really caught him in a beautiful pose and the composition is perfect.
TFS and all the best, Ulla

Hi Ralf, excellent shot of this Powerful Owl. I didn't even know these things existed, now I'll keep an eye out for them. Your composition is great and yes it is dark but I agree with you, the atmosphere in this case is very good. Even in this darkened condition all the detail is available.

Thanks, John

Hi Ralf

Nice shot. Look at those talons! I would want to tangle with those. Nice quality work. :-)
