The New Holland Honeyeater is an active bird, and rarely sits long enough to provide an extended view. I had one shot of this one, then the opportunity was gone.

In this shot we see the Honeyeater feeding on a Crimson Bottlebrush near Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains. They are considered a common bird throughout much of southern Australia (though I’ve only seen the one so far) in heath, forests, woodland and gardens, especially where Grevillea and Banksia are found.

They are active feeders and eat mostly the nectar of flowers. They are considered very important in the cross pollination process of many of the plants here.

They will breed at any time of the year, whenever there are blossoms available. The cup-shaped nest is made of bark and grasses, bound together with spider web. It is lined with soft material and placed in a bush (in the shade) in the summer, or on the edge of the bush (in the sun) in the winter. Two to three eggs hatch after 18 days. The young leave the nest after 16 days. Both parents feed the chicks. The female will sometimes leave the male to this task after the first few weeks and go off and start another nest. This way it is possible to raise two or three broods in a year.

Much of this from:
http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheets/new_holland_honeyeater.htm and
http://www.bluemts.com.au/reptilepark/animals.asp?catID=1&ID=33

Workflow for this shot was as follows:
Shot in jpeg, then converted to tiff
Adjusted curves (mainly RGB)
Burned and Dodged with 5% opacity brush on overlay layer
Adjusted for contrast on separate layer
Saved as a tiff
For this post re-sized, added frame, sharpened using smart sharpen, saved as a jpeg

Hi John
Beautiful capture of this bird!
I like a lot this colorful picture, the contrast between reds and greens are very good ones.
The yellow feathers on the wings are the color accent to the overall composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi John

Lovely colours and sharpness. The overall impression is sort of Pre-Raphaelite, like a William Morris Design.

Great result, John - the Nikon combination would appear to be working very well, and congrats on the post processing, too.
BTW - I just got myself a Nikon F80 today!

Hi John. Brilliant pose and colours in this fine capture. Having the red flower like that will make this one of your classics. Innovative frame works to enhance it also. Good work. Murray.

YESSSSSSSSS! I remember these guys John! And they were very hard to shoot! Lovely lil tufts on there neck, and then the yellow patches on the sides. I found they blended in well with the colours of the wood on the bushes and trees, not?
They are/were plentiful in WA, when I was there. Very agressive behaviour towards other birds too! ;) Tfs, and bringing back memories! Jay

Bonjour John,
Excellen shot of the bird (Honeyeater) beautiful colors and catch, nice point of view..Well done..
Michel

Hi John,

A nice image of the New Holland Honeyeater, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Pierre

Hello John. It is always nice to be able to capture birds against the clear background eliminating all the busyness exposing the plumage. Some birds like this one do not perch for long and I have the same problem here especially with trees having thick foliage. This one is very nicely assimilated in natural environment. The bottlebrush provides beauty with pleasant small leaves depicting the natural environment. The back view is interesting with tints of contrasting yellow on the wing. You have covered this one very well in vertical format with clever framing for TN. Well done and best regards. Jusni
