Great Morinda

Don’t you just love the view this plant has as it is growing? I was up on a lookout hill on Mana Island and had photographed the area 360 degrees and I saw this plant looking out to sea. So I couldn’t resist taking a photo of it. And fortunately there was a name attached to it. And only now as I looked up the internet for facts on it I realise it is the ‘new’ wonder plant that many people are now selling as a ‘miracle’ fruit. They say that the juice of the Noni fruit is rich in health promoting vitamins, trace elements, enzymes, beneficial alkaloids, etc., etc.

Noni, or Morinda citrifolia, comes from the Rubiaceae family which has 80 different plant species in it. Noni is a small tree or shrub that has been used in many cultures, including the Pacific Islands, for over 2,000 years. The noni plant can even grow as high as 20 feet. It has large evergreen leaves and small white flowers that sprout at different times during the year. The flowers become bumpy, pitted fruit that is several inches long. Upon ripening, the yellowish-white skin of the fruit things and turns somewhat translucent. At this time, the flesh has an offensive odour in which some describe as rotten cheese. The fruit has numerous brown seeds with air sacs which allow the seeds to be buoyant in the water. Many attribute that to the idea that because of their buoyancy the noni fruit travelled by sea to other parts of the world. Noni is mostly found on the island terrains of the South Pacific (including Tahiti and Hawaii), Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Africa, Guam, and the West Indies (Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island). The noni plant grows fruit mostly year-round.

But apart from all these uses of Noni, I found the tree’s outstanding view more interesting than the facts about the plant. I hope you all like it too. The different colours of the lagoon waters within the coral reef is so different from the outer Pacific Ocean. I do plan to post some views from this lookout hill one day soon.

All I do with these photos is to sharpen, crop for TN and place a border around it. I definitely don’t change the colours, contrasts or saturation, this is as it is. Nature as nature is…

Janice, it's lovely indeed. I know you don't like to "change" nature, but anyway, maybe I'd try a different composition in which the plant wouldn't be at the center of the photo.

But this is just a preference, of course.

Apart from that, the shot is really great. Excellent and vivid colors, great sharpness and pov.
