Mimosa pudica or Mimosa invisa
Touch Me Not.

I’ve been saving this photo since I came home from Fiji last August. I had no idea of the name of this plant, and had been told it was called Touch me not but I couldn’t find that on Google. And yesterday I saw the plant in Goutham Rameshs photo, and he has kindly told me it’s name was Mimosa pudica. Thanks Goutham. He said that it is crawling plant with little prickles, red flower and a Red fruit. They are interesting plants, and it is fun to watch their leaves fold up and then slowly open up again. Known as Mimosa pudica, and Danger: All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested!!

I found it growing on top of the hill on Mana Island and I thought it was so pretty. I did ask one of the staff whom we met up on the hill what it was. She said that it wasn’t a good plant at all. So I have done a check-up about it on Google, and realise it is either Mimosa pudica or Mimosa invisa – both called Touch Me Not.

First described from Brazil, now a tropical weed. It is native to tropical America from southern Mexico to Central America, West Indies and now found in many Pacific Ocean islands.

In Fiji, it is an abundantly naturalized weed in cultivated areas, along roadsides, in pastures, on wasteland, and forming mats on the dry mud of riverbanks.

Propagation: Seed pods float and are spread by water. Pods re also spread when attached to fur, clothing and mud on vehicles. Spread by bulldozers, graders, roadside slashers, etc.

Mimosa invisa, is a particularly nasty plant covered with thorns. It is a fast-growing thorny shrub that forms dense tangles that are difficult to walk through. It is present in a number of South Pacific locations, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia (Society Islands), Hawai'i, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, but, fortunately, has not yet reached Tonga. It has only recently been introduced to Niue and eradication efforts there are ongoing.

Nice pair Janice and very good composition. The colours are very good and bright and the shaprness/dof is very good too. Beautifull flowers which we only have in green houses here in the cold Scandinavia.

Hello Janice!

Very interesting subject today. This plant is well known also in Poland [surprise! in Polish it is called Mimoza ;-)]. I like your interesting note [I wonder how it is called in Fijian ;-)]. Details, colours and asymetric composition of photo are great! Very nice for still white winter my friend!

A prick from its small thorn is extremly painful.
