PUKA
Botanical Name: Meryta sinclairii
Family: Araliaceae
Type: Evergreen Tree
Size: 4-6m high

This is a young Puka tree, showing the new leaves growing and opening up.

The genus Meryta contains about 25 species, most of which are found in New Caledonia. Meryta sinclairii is only found in New Zealand. The Puka is quite an impressive tree. When young the bush has a single stem, branching with age to form a bushy broad-topped specimen.

The leaves of this tropical-looking tree are glossy green and large, being 25-50 cm long and half as wide again. The tree grows into a rounded shape and will branch if encouraged.

Heavily veined, the leaves are quite leathery and wavy on the edges. A few weeks before shedding, the leaves turn rich yellow and are quite attractive.

The flowers, produced mid-winter, are very small and green. These are followed (on female plants only) by 12mm long black, shiny fruits.

Lovely soft colors. You caught also the spirit and power of plant life in this picture.

Very nice Janice,
Excellent composition, fantastic bright greens and very well detailed.
Thanks for posting

Great shot!
I think that plants are quite hard to capture. Of course they don't usually run away when they see a photographer ;-) like most animals do.
What I mean is that its not easy to take really good and interesting shot, but I think you can do it well and here's the next example.
I like it very much.
Well done!

New life explosion! Very optimistic image Janice! Fresh greens, well spotted and captured. Puka in Polish means 'he/she is knocking' ;-) Rather funny name for a plant ;-)

This is such a fresh image, full of spring. Beautiful. Reminds me of a fresh salad (or is that because I haven't eaten yet?). Great pov.
Well done and thanks for posting.

Hello Janice, this is certainly in the thick of it. I like the POV and the feeling that I am inside the plant. Lovely composition and good details, you did a fine job.
