Agave attenuata / Swan's neck agave / Agavaceae

Agave attenuata, or Soft-leaved Agave, is a native of Mexico. It is an attractive plant of manageable height. The 2-foot (60 cm) leaves are soft green or grey-green and somewhat translucent. As plants age, they can reach 5 feet (1.5 m) tall and form dense clumps up to 5 feet across if given the opportunity. It is an excellent plant for southern exposure in the home environment, since they lack the spines that most Agaves have.

Blooming
Flowers are greenish yellow on dense arching spikes 12-24 feet (4-7 meters) long. It may take up to 10 years to bloom on a flowering spike that emerges from the apex. The spike itself looks a bit like a stalk of asparagus (not a surprise, as they are related). Each plant stalk blooms only once (the plant is considered monocarpic). The plant saves up energy for its whole life and seems to expend it all in this showy display, so therefore it is not a common event. Even though the flowers are not particularly showy, the massiveness of the inflorescence is.

This is beautiful! The leaves seem to be made of velvet. Very nice. Colors are great, details are fine and composition is excellent. TFS!

Excellent composition and accurate DOF revealing the subtle shades of green. A very artistic and pleasant capture Janice, good job.

The leaves are lovely Janice. The light yellow edge stands out and gives awesome definition to the leaf. I agress with Pieter that the leaves look like velvet. The new growth makes a nice contrast. Good crisp clear shot. Thanks

A very nice, arty and affective picture of these agave leaves - The blue grey of the oplder leaves in the back sets off the younger growth perfectly - Well execute picture!!!
