[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I’ve seen this tree a few times but have had trouble giving it a name. I did think it was the juvenile Towai, Weinmannia silvicol, but TimTim / Tim has told me that it is the Makamaka. And he is right - thanks Tim.

I think the plant is quite attractive and I like how the new leaves appear at the ends as shown here.

Makamaka is a small bushy tree, growing naturally along stream and forest margins between Kaitaia and Whangarei. And it’s even growing here on the North Shore of Auckland.

It has creamy white flowers in Spring, which develop into bright pinkish-red seed capsules in Summer.

Very similar to juvenile foliage of Weinmannia silvicola, which is what I first thought it was until Tim told me otherwise – thanks Tim.

It can be distinguished by the domatia (small structures or depressions on the lower surface of a leaf in some trees) on the underside of the leaves. These domatia are known as tuft pocket domatia and occur at the junction of the mid-rib and the side vein where there is a pocket of hairs.

Makamaka also has huge prominent stipules that are large, green and heavily veined.

Great shot of this Towai. Very good POV and DOF. beautifull green colours, and it shows the new leaves perfectly. Great detail! Well done!

Well done. You have soft focus but enough sharpness to easily discern the plant characteristics. The central focus on the two leaves makes for an eye pleasing artistic composition.

High end art close-up picture. The subject is brilliant as well as the taste and skill of the photographer. I like wonderful diagonal composition of the picture, excellently selection of the DOF and impressive combination of the sharpness and blurriness. Light and colours are clear and rich. Well I can't help you at all with the idenity but I can tell you its a great shot! I really like the diagonal line of the leaves and your DOF leaving the background in a blurr but showing the leaves in perfect sharp focus , its a very peaceful and beautiful photo. TFS

I am not sure this is a Towai, from this photo it looks to me like 'Makamaka' CALDCLUVIA ROSIFOLIA But prob need to see from another angle.
