CURIOSITY PLANT
Cereus peruvianus monstrosus

Well what do you think of this beauty? ? ?

This is Peru’s slow growing cactus of unusual deformed growth, Cereus peruvianus monstrosus, and also known as Curiosity Plant. This is a monstrose form of the Cereus peruvianus. Many cacti and other succulents have a crested or monstrose form, where the growth is abnormal in some way, being deformed into a cockscomb, or with various lumps or knobs that are different from the normal growth patterns of the plants, as they would ordinarily appear.

They are not sick or diseased, and you cannot make it happen on an otherwise normal plant. It just sort of spontaneously arises and is perpetuated via cuttings and grafts, as seedlings are most commonly normal if seeds are produced. Bugs don’t cause it, nor does cold weather, etc. No one knows exactly why some plants do this, but they do.

They can grow from 10-30 feet high and have spines or sharp edges so you need extreme caution when handling them. It bears white flowers, which are followed by brown fruits.

This is another of the plants I saw at Auckland’s Winter and Summer hothouses in Auckland’s Domain.

I wonder, when you look at this most unusual plant, what you can see in it? Personally I can see a lady with hands raised up to her face. Can anyone else see something different?

What an unusual looking cacti,It looks like a lady with her hands clasped.I saw this before I read your note!
Nice vivid colours and good detail.

Indeed, it looks like a very strange blue weeping maiden ... with a little fantasy and a glass of wine, of course ...

What a weird plant Janice! Blue colour is incredible, same as modern sculpture like shapes. It looks for me as Alien with one hand near its face, a sad Alien. Great and interesting capture, these hothouses must be great place to visit. I hope we'll meet there some day :-)

very unusual shapes and forms all those in combinations with a strange colour make this shot unique! congratulations

Well, to me it looks more like sad or anxious. I like the plant with all its wrinkles and yes – it looks very much like an old lady. Well seen Janice.

Curious indeed, and also very catchy colors and shape. Looks like a sculpture of multilple "hands" joining at the top. Very good soft light and a great composition, Janice.

Excellent and unusual capture, Janice!
I also see this figure with hands up toward the face area.
Any ideas as to its age?
Good detail, lighting, color and composition.
Well done and thank you for sharing it with us.

Wonderful shot Janice, It reminds me of that dog. You know the one I can't remember its name :)

Regards Steve.

Une bonne présentation, on dirait un fantôme.

Félicitations !

Beautiful, as are most succulents and cacti. The inward focused curves remind me of a mirliton or chayote (Sechium edule), as they both seem to be folding in on themselves. Wonderful DOF.

Hello again Janice!
It's very interresting shot.I'd never seen before.DOF,colors, framing and composition are excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting post Jancie, never seen this before..Nice POV and framing, great note. Well done!

Never seen a blue cacti before, very strange formation. Great POV and light.

A most unusual plant, so interesting to see. Somewhat like us people, who knows why some of us turn out like we do, but someone always finds beauty in everyone, even when unusual. Sometimes the unusual is more interesting! Very nice, clear sharp photo Janice.

Janice, this is the wierdest plant I have seen. Both in colour and shape. The compo works and I see the praying hands. Very well done.

Hello Janice,

I see everything in it. At most a Lady, but also a Chinese dog. A great and strange photo. I like the frame that you used. It´s beautiful with this cactus composition. Regards and TFS BOB
