Golden Barrel
Scientific Name: Echinocactus grusonii Hildmann
Family: Cactaceae

The Golden Barrel is is one of the most popular of all cacti in cultivation, mainly for its golden spines that keep looking attractive after several years. It is much admired for its large rotund form, dramatically adorned with neat rows of clustered golden spines.

The Golden Barrel has 1.5 to 2 inches (4-5 cm) golden yellow flowers from end of September to end of October in the Southern Hemisphere. The flowers are produced only on mature specimens receiving enough full sun. The flowers are not very visible being small in relation with the size of the barrel, and lost into the creamy colored wool at the top of the globe.

Echinocactus Grusonii and most other barrels will produce hundreds of pods each season. After the flower dies off and the pods are ready to harvest, the pods will be damp inside and not full of moisture.

This is another one of the plants I saw at the Summer and Winter Hothouses at Auckland’s Domain.
