Painted Nettles / Coleus blumei

I found this unnamed plant growing in the hothouse at the Auckland Domain’s Winter Gardens this week, and I’m quite sure it is a Coleus, also known as Painted Nettles / Coleus blumei. Although the new name for the coleus group is Solenostemon scutellarioides, most still consider them as Coleus.

Coleus plants are durable and easy to grow, but even the slightest frost will cause them to die. They are best known for their bright colours, and variety of foliage forms. Although these plants are a member of the nettle family, they are a mint. They do not have the stinging properties of the nettle. Coleus are colourful foliage plants that come in a wide range of colours including yellow, white, pink, red, chartreuse, or green with contrasting colour patterns. They are recognised by having an opposite leaf arrangement on square stems.

Don’t you think the colours and patterns are so attractive? And you can also see where a bug, maybe a caterpillar, has eaten holes in the leaves. These plants also make a nice houseplant as long as it receives sufficient light and food. Flower buds must be pinched off as soon as they develop to prevent the plant from producing seeds. Once a Coleus is allowed to go to seed, it has completed it's life objective, and it will usually die. I tried growing them a few years back, but they usually went too leggy as I was too slow at pinching the ends off.

Hi Janice.
This morning rain, rain, rain...but - this is excellent opportunity to take some photos of fresh greens with water droplets :-)
Colour is the key in your picture. Colour and composition - little chaotic, but works very well for me. These leaves look almost UV ;-) I like it! And now I'm going to catch few similiar in Garden.
