Mammillaria Cactus
This is probably the most popular group of cacti among growers and there are about 150 species in the genus.
Most of these cacti are native to Mexico, but also in the SW of the USA south to Columbia and Venezuela. These plants don’t have ribs – they have tubercles that vary greatly in shape. They are also known as Pincushion Cacti.
Most of these cactuses are small and rounded and thickly covered in spines. This one here has feathery white/cream spines fanning out from its woolly body. It was only about 8cms tall and has quite a distinct pattern on its body and at its crown.
They produce rings of beautiful flowers around the crown in spring to early summer even when quite young. They sometimes flower a second time later in the season, year after year.
This is another one of the cacti that I saw at Auckland Domains Winter Gardens. |
