ZYGOCACTUS truncatus / "Christmas cactus"

This attractive tropical cactus comes from Brazil and flowers at Christmas time in the Northern Hemisphere. The common holiday cacti (Thanksgiving Cactus, Christmas Cactus, Easter Cactus) have many Latin names, but are closely related. They are all cultivated plants, originating in the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, South America. They are very popular cacti that produce stunning bright scarlet, pink, white and many other coloured bright flowers. The names of these cacti, which are native to jungles rather than deserts, denote their blossoming season.

Some Holiday Cacti are hybrids between Schlumbergera truncata and Schlumbergera russelliana from about 150 years ago in England. The original plants grow as epiphytes at elevations between 1000 and 1700 meters in the Organ Mountains. One flaw of the holiday cacti is that the joints of the plants are quite fragile and can break apart if the plant is in poor health. The flower buds' joints are especially easy to detach.

This Christmas blooming cactus Zygocactus truncatus has claw like stem joints and can bear 2 inch long hooded tubular pink, reddish, white or multicolored flowers that can light up the room with their iridescent colours ans shine.

At the Wintergardens at Auckland’s Domain they had many colours growing, but I like how this one’s stamens and petals have broken away from the plant and are just lying there ready to fall with a little puff of wind. I love these pale pink petals with the darker tinges of pink and how they shine in the light.

Hi Janice, lovely looking flower. The colours are great and I like the crop/composition. A good attempt at a macro although I think it needs more DOF, the bits that are in focus are sharp so technique is fine. Well done.
