Citrus Medica
'Buddha's Hand'
Common Name: Citron
Family: Rutaceae
Country of Origin: India

I found this plant growing in the Wintergarden at Auckland’s Domain today. It is quite an intriguing shape and one of the gardeners allowed us to touch one of the fruit that had broken off the plant.

The scent was very citrusy, definitely lemon and not orange. Lovely scent. And when I rubbed it in my hands it had quite a nice, soft oily feel and the scent stayed for a long time. But no, I couldn't taste it as I couldn't break any off the fruit. The gardener was looking!!

This cultivar of the Citron is a most exotic and unusual fruit. Thought to be the oldest known citrus in cultivation, it produces a large fruit with long protruding fingers and a thick rind. Although thought to be inedible, the rind is often candied. The fresh fruit has no internal flesh, but is said to be highly esteemed in China where it is hung up to perfume rooms and cupboards.

In China it has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb and also as a candy. The fruit is first pickled in salt for a month to remove the bitter taste of the tannin, drained, washed and then steamed to soften the fruit. The fruit can then be cut into pieces and candied as you would lemon zest. The resulting candy is an aromatic and tasty snack that is perfect for indigestion and sore throat.

The fruit is about 12-18cms long. Buddha's hand is one of the oddities of the citrus family, as unlike other well-known citrus they're not eaten fresh. This fruit looks like an old shrivelled hand with a thick uneven tightly adhered rind.

Hi Janice, lovely shot... nice contrast, details and DOF, very well captured! I like the colours too. Is there a lot of plants flowering in the garden now? Very well captured, thanks for sharing my dear.. ;)

What a strange plant! I have never seen anything like that in Europe. Lovely shape and good composition here. Mabye the image lacks a bit of sharpness. Good job anyway! Well done!

Hello Janice,

What a strange plant! The focus seems a little soft, but the colors are great and I like the composition. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

It's nice to see the photo of this weird citrus here on TN. I've seen it in TV - it grows in our Botanical gardens.
The photo is very good, has perfect composition and great colours.

Janice, a really nice post. Maybe I would try to add a little bit of sharpness, but that's just an opinion.

Great pov and colors. Gret note too; I didn't know the fruit.

A fascinating fruit, Janice, and well captured here with the vibrant colors and well placed composition. Very nice. I'll want to taste one sometime....

Buddha's hand? Possibly! I remember one of Buddha's monument with thin, long fingers. Or maybe it looks like postmodern octopuss ;-) Anyway - subject is great. Is it edible? Did you eat this?

This is great, I've read about this before but have never actually seen it.
Excellent composition and the bg is great.
IMHO I think the focus is a tad soft, but it's still a great image.
Thanks for posting Janice.

I have not seen before,Janice!
