The Kaka Beak is an endangered native tree of New Zealand and features in the Botanic Garden. The black behind is a piece of clothing held up to give a better background than the plants at the gardens behind it.

Kaka Beak (Clianthus puniceus rosea, Kowhai Ngutu Kaka)

The name Kaka Beak comes from the shape and colour of the flower which looks like the beak of the Kaka, one of NZ's native parrots. Kaka Beak was used by the Maori to feed caged Tui's. These native birds were kept in captivity to attract and capture other birds. The bright red flowers are held in groups from arching stems, well clear of the delicate fern like foliage. Each flower holds copious nectar at the base of the flower attracting Tuis & other nectar loving birds. Flowering from early spring for several months.

Hi Pam,
Lovely shot,
The black BG works well to show up the flowers.
Nice work.
:)

Hi Pam

Very simple and effective composition. The two complemetary colours on a very dark background works really great here. The dof is spot on and shows plenty of details in the red flower.

Taking a closer look it seems like the background is somehow "curled" like a black sheet or blanket. If so it could meen that the flower is a cultivated plant and this is not to be posted here but on TE or TL.

Apart from that it is a very nice capture to look at.
