Hi Janice, firstly this is not a bee, it is a Hoverfly most likely of the genus Eristalis. The fly is soft in focus but the flower below the one that she is sitting on is in better focus. If you are taking these shots with auto focus your camera may being using multi point focus, switch to single point focus and see how you get on. Also, you will find increasing your DOF to F8 will improve things. Another thing to try is to get down to their level, get amongst them, you'll get better pictures like that. When you've got all those things installed, you can then think about composition. It can takes many many many half hours of practice to get macros right.
Keep them coming :-)
Very shot focus on the Hoverfly, but nice colors. I agree with Paul you should increase your DOF.
Yes I agree with PDP, it's out of focus, but don't worry you are like myself, we learn more and more.
If we want a good picture we maybe need to shot more than 20. Continue, you are not far to get better images.
Jean louis.
Janice your post is very very good despite what you think. Diffinately worth more than 2 points. Well done
Hi Janice
Don't dispair, it will come right. Firstly DOF or depth of field. Thrre things determine "how" the camera will measure your ambient light, and record it, and use this to expose the film or CCD. !. The ISO. A low number such as 100 means little noise digitally, a high number like ISO 100 means a lot of noise. Low ISO also give slower SS [shutter speeds] than high ISO settings.
2. SS the higher the SS, the less time the shutter will stay open and the less time you will expose the film or CCD. Now, If you shoor a waterfall at 1/1000 sec, you will affectively *freeze* the individual water drops. If you shoot the same scene at 1/30 sec, the water will blur and give you an overall flowing motion feeling in your picture. Look at Extramundi - he posted a waterfall recently that shows this.
3/ Aperture or f-stop - this means how wide or how narrow the lens opening or aperure will open. F 2.8 is a large aperture ant allow in a lot of light, hence you can use a fast shutter speed. F22 is a very small aperture opening, hence you need a long ss.

Callie
Hi Janice.
You manage quite well with you macro.
I'm agree with Paul and Callie.
You have to try and try, it's not easy to shot macros.
I will look forward to your next macro. Keep them coming.
