Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata)

There are two subspecies of Zebra finch: Taeniopygia guttata castanotis lives in open grasslands and agricultural areas troughout most of Australia except for the north, east and south coast; the other subspecies, Taeniopygia guttata guttata is found in Timor and surrounding Indonesian islands. The latter is somewhat smaller, the males have a smaller breast-band and only faint barring at the throat.

The Zebra finch is a medium sized finch, 10-11 cm long and weighing about 12 gr. Its head and back are grey, the tail has black and white bars. The legas are orange, the bill is red in males, orange in females. The eyes are red in wild Zebra finches. Males have chestnut earpatches, black barring at the throat and their flanks are chestnut with white spots.
Zebra finches live in flocks all year round, the breeding flocks consisiting of about 50 individuals, the non-breeding flocks about twice as many. Zebra finches can do without water for a very long time, however during dry periods thousands of birds may come together in a place near water.

Zebra finches eat mainly grass seeds, but in the breeding season they also catch insects.
There is no well-defined breeding season, breeding generally start just after rainfall. Zebra finch pairs bond for life. They will make a nest in a tree, bush, tree hole or even in a shallow hole in the ground. The flask-shaped nest is made of grass, lined with feathers and wool, and has an entrance tunnel on the side. In it the female lays 4-5 white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for 12-16 days. The young leave the nest after about 15-22 days.

Excellent catch very good details and very interesting bird, excellent quality.

Focus is spot on on the bird. Little bit of noise in the background, could be zapped with Neat Image (www.neatimage.com) which would smooth it out.

Hi Pam
I was contemplating between this little critter and the b'fly, but birdies normally win. Very good shot, he is So small, and you nailed him beautifully, lovely little birds and a frim cage bird favourite. I like the detail in the face very much, TFS

Really amongst the beautiful birds, this one, and you've caught him very well in situation. Great colors, very sharp feather texture. I also like the dual tones in the BG. Superb diagonal framing. Very good, Pam!
