ARAUCARIA HETEROPHYLLA
Family: ARAUCARIACEAE (ARAUCARIA FAMILY)
Common Names: NORFOLK ISLAND PINE

Here we are looking up from under a large Norfolk Island Pine Tree. You can see the different colours of the bark as well as the new branches growing among the older ones. Those dark branches older branches once used to be just like those bright green leaves. And the brown needles are dying. Once they start to go brown, they don’t recover, they will change colour and drop to the ground.

It isn’t actually a pine, this plant is a member of the Araucariaceae family. All of the species of Araucaria are native to the Southern Hemisphere.

LEAF: Spirally arranged, short (1/2 inch), curved spruce-like needles, dark green above and below. Adult foliage associated with fertile branches is more scale-like, shorter and broader.
FLOWER: Male cones are pendant, 1½ inch long. Female cones broadly egg-shaped and green, at branch tips.
FRUIT: A large cone, 5 inches long and 6 inches wide, cone scales bearing a recurved spine, green changing to brown.
TWIG: Slender and green, covered in foliage for several years, later turning brown and retaining dead foliage.
BARK: Initially covered in dead needles, becoming smooth and gray-brown, later rough and dark, broken into small plates.
FORM: Very symmetrical, graceful, and pyramidal, with stiff main branches and drooping lateral branches. Becomes very large in its native habitat.

Excellent POV! I had to look twice to see at what angle you shot this tree. The picture seems to be a bit noisy though, maybe the light was low?

Your attention to detail is exquisite! Your title and picture create a theme of growth and depict how grand and amazing it can be, whilst the note gives a scientific description of the tree's growth. I don't think you have left anything out! Excellent work!

Excellent POV. Focus a bit soft but not an easy shot while you are standing on your head. Good colours and deatil Nice work Janice. TFS

I love the way this flows diagonally up the photo. Wonderful branchy tree, the info is very interesting too, I'd love to visit NZ someday to see all the beauty myself!

Nice shot Janice,
A real tree climbers paradise, great memories of childhood.
