ARAUCARIA HETEROPHYLLA
Family: ARAUCARIACEAE (ARAUCARIA FAMILY) (or-ro-CAY-ri-a)
Common Names: NORFOLK ISLAND PINE

This is a photo of the dead leaves of the Norfolk Island Pine as they have fallen onto the ground and also onto a green branch of leaves that is growing only 30 cms from the base of the tree itself. The needles die and change colours before they fall – here they are yellow, orange and brown.

The Norfolk Island Pine, while not a true pine, really is an evergreen tree and it does come from Norfolk Island, an island in the South Pacific located between New Caledonia and Australia. It is quite beautiful and the foliage has a soft texture. Growing very upright, the tree forms a very symmetrical pyramid, with branches emerging from the trunk in a regular and precise pattern.

The twigs are slender and green, covered in foliage for several years, later turning brown and retaining dead foliage, until it drops off and falls to the ground. The leaves are spirally arranged, awl-shaped and short, curved spruce-like needles, dark green above and below. The foliage is soft looking and light green. Leaves on young trees are narrowly wedge-shaped, about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) long; on mature trees the leaves are scalelike and overlapping, about 0.25 in (0.6 cm) long. They look somewhat like spruce or fir needles at first glance. Mature leaves are somewhat contorted on twisted branches. Both leaf types appear on the tree at the same time. The juvenile foliage of the Norfolk Island pine is soft and pliable as well as durable and beautiful!

LOvely colours - they blend and contrast so well. My mum has one of these trees in her front yard so I love the perspective of this shot.I'll look at her tree with new eyes. Thanks

What I like most about this picture is the contrast: green and brown, alive and dead, young and old. You have also displayed the structural differences between the needles. Very nice.

I love it when you experiment with these textures and patterns. Impressive color and composition. Might I suggest that you could have used ISO 200 and increased the DOF a bit by stepping down on the aperture setting. Great shot, Janice well done.

Great picture Janice.
Very strong colours and contrast, good composition and details.
