The House Sparrow

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Ploceidae
Genera: Passer
Species: domesticus

This is a male House Sparrow, an introduced bird to New Zealand. He isn’t showing his breeding colours right now as it is autumn here in NZ.

The adult male is chestnut brown above, streaked black on his back. He has a dark grey crown, greyish brown rump and greyish white underparts. The black bib gets larger in the breeding season and the conical greyish pink bill turns black.

The females and juveniles are a drab sandy brown with streaked darker upper parts and greyish white underparts, with a pale buffy eyebrow and sides to neck.

These birds are found all over NZ. And this is one of the families of sparrows that ‘hang out’ at out local café at Mairangi Bay. I was pleased I had my 70-300 lens on when we went there for a coffee last weekend. As soon as a table emptied the sparrows were in, looking for as many crumbs as they could possibly find before the waitress came to clean up the table. . .

Janice,
I've asaid this in the past, you've got this knack of making ordinary things look exotic and very beautiful. This surely does reflect in this shot>I do prefer your shots wherein the BG also set the tone, but that is not to take anything away from this crisp shot!
Cheers!
Goldy

There is a marked difference in yours and ours here! It is not a subtle difference at all...but I can see that this is what you say it is...and I am totally fascinated by it! Very nice Janice! You are so blessed and don't forget..no matter how much we tend to dislike winter..it can be fun!

Hi Janice,

What a stunning shot of this common House Sparrow, the detail in the plumage is superb, its crisp and sharp with excellent eye detail, and with the two tone OOF background just make this little fellow stand out, beautiful work.

Cheers Rick :)
