NZ Grasses

Grasses are everywhere in New Zealand: on hillsides and roadsides; on cliffs and escarpments; in National Parks and city parks; on sand dunes and on gravel beaches; in fresh water and in salt water; in native forests and in plantation forests; in pastures, among crops, and in fallows; and at the tops of mountains where they have only lichens for company.

There are 188 native species and 226 naturalised grasses in New Zealand. Grasses are among the most significant economic plants in the world, the cereals - wheat, oats, barley, rice and maize - and the pasture grasses - ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy, fescues and blue-grasses. Grasses are weeds too - twitch, Johnson grass, barley grass and nassella tussock.

Grasses are often very beautiful, and I think this one is especially attractive. It grows in the native bush area on the cliff between Murrays Bay and Mairangi Bay. I have been searching for its name, but I can’t find one yet – sorry!

I like grass.
I like it in spring whet it is fresh and bright green. I like it in summer, meadows full of different shapes and colours of grass and I like it in autumn, dried and rustling. Your todays picture is tribute to grass and I like it very much Janice!

Hello Janice, good work on an common but diverse subject. The details are excellent, no troubles with the focus here, the DOF is good too. I'm unsure if the composition works, I find I'm turning my head to see it. I have tried in photoshop to get a better view and to be honest I can't! I think the composition needs simplification, just the main stalk against a dark BG (at a slightly less acute angle) would work very well.

The note is great.

So good Janice, nice change from most of the other work on NT. I really like the light, contrast of colours and use of DOF. PDPs comments on composition have some merit and if you could revisit this scene more simplicity might work well. Great image, regards Rob

Your picture is very nice and the details are sharp. I like the colors as they are vivid and saturated. I agree completely with Paul about the composition. Even before I read his critique I was turning my head to try and get the full focus. Exposure is pretty good and I like the BG a lot. As always your note is good. Well done & TFS!

Oups ! I miss this beautiful photo during my summer holidays... It is the Janice style, simple and smart natural composition. Good contrast grass / dark background. The light on grass is nice too. Congratulation Janice.
