Maori Name:- Kowhai
Common Name:- Kowhai, meaning Yellow
Botanical Name:- Sophora microphylla

Hurrah, my camera is back! After a slight hiccup and another visit to the camera hospital today, I am back in action.

When the New Zealand native Kowhai trees flower you know it's springtime. Enjoy this special NZ flower – the Kowhai, it is pronounced: “CO-FI”. In Maori, the letters “WH” are pronounced as an “F”

Kowhai is famous for its beautiful yellow or golden flowers, which appear in early spring. During spring they bear bright yellow flowers in great profusion. The base of which is filled with nectar a favourite for the nectar feeders Tui, Bellbird, Stitchbird and Kereru (wood pigeon).

The pods which appear after flowering each contain six or more seeds. Unusual for New Zealand plants, some species of Kowhai are deciduous, losing their tiny, dull green leaves each winter. Some species also pass through a juvenile stage of densely tangled foliage (branches and leaves) for six to ten years before they start to flower, eventually growing into a small tree up to ten metres tall.

They grow to around 10m throughout N.Z., the Chatham Islands and Chile.

Kowhai trees have medicinal properties – used by the Maori people – poultices were made from the bark for applying to wounds and mixed with Manuka was used for treating internal pains.

Great news Janice!
This picture is stunning! Colours are amazing, so saturated and bright. Same as sharpness. I like POV, composition with crowded but good looking BG, details. You're lucky - spring comes to your place! Maori name is as always delightful ;-)

Hi Janice,
Very colorful flower. I like the POV and DOF on this one. Well done. I wish it was spring here. It is starting the fall sesason, which I love, its what comes after that I now prefer to avoid.

Janice, great to know you're back to action. And this is a great return. Besides, it sounds poetic to return with spring.

I do enjoy contrast a lot. Lovely colors and composition. Great lighting.

Congratulations.

Fantastic shot Janice. The yellow against the blue make good contrasting colours. Very sharp and clear image. I'm happy for you that your Spring has finally arrived. It will be Autumn here soon, but forecast is 23c for tomorrow, so still nice and warm.

Personal assessment of the photo: excellent.
Power of evocation in me: a new flower for me.
Strong visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete. Camera hospital ;-)
Thank you Janice.

Lovely with springtime colours. It is very rainy and grey in Sweden and the yellow leafs on the trees blows away already in September, so autumn is soooo boring. But I will soon leave for a couple of weeks far away, again. Have a nice springtime, Janice! And the photo is excellent, as usual!
