Dicksonia fibrosa

This attractive symmetrical looking tree fern is a favourite of mine. I love the crinkly sound the fronds make as you touch them, and they always seems to be such a pretty green too.

The hardiness of this tree fern make it a slow grower but it forms a very large trunk up to 60 cm in diameter.

This tree fern grows to 6 metres and naturally occurs throughout New Zealand from sea level to cold areas, at elevations up to 1000 metres, and is able to withstand 18-20°F. Its spreading fern-like, light green fronds grow well from the Auckland area south to Stewart Island, and Stewart Island is the most southerly island in NZ.

I love the crisp feel of these fronds. We had a wall of Wheki-Ponga trunks back-filled on a small hillock once and quite a few of them took root and grew. It was a lovely looking wall that just kept growing – and then we sold up and moved. I hope it’s still there.

HI Janice, nice image. I like the composition and the dark areas. The different green tones are nice too. Well done.

Hi Janice

Gosh, I think I have seen this shot somewhere before. I think I can give it a better critique. Love the way the foreground frond overlaps the fronds underneath. The different angles make this an interesting shot. Nice different shades of green against a complimentary dark background. I think 'my friend' would give this 'Honours', I know I would! :-)

Hello Janice,
Excellent fern capture.Crisp clear, well framed and composed as always.
TFS...:-)

Great composition with ferns, Janice.
I like the slightly different tone of green of the top one.
My native place in the Himalayas is full of ferns, and I always thought they were rather dull subjects for a picture. Not anymore, thank you! :-)
Will be going back to India tomorrow and try my hand at it.
TFS.

Hi Janice,

Beautiful colors (well, mostly the dark green with one light green). Nice composition, not quite a traditional "pattern" shot, but a nice twist on it.
Mike

I like the detail and the depth accomplished here, the shot gives you the feel of the fresh green foilage, nice shot.

Hello Janice, You are offering us a festival of ferns this week :-). That's a good timing for me for I just planted 6 ferns in my garden 2 days ago! This picture is the best in my opinion of your fern series. The exposisure cannot be better for your can see all the different tones of green composing the foliage. The dark bg compliments so well the leaves too. Excellent composition and pov! Great job: I like it very much! TFS,

Michel

Everytime I see a fern I think of you Janice, and we have a LOT of ferns around here. I think you're the "queen" of the fern photos, at least I think so. The color here is so good, the dark background highlights the fern so well. Perfect focus and composition, well done. I'll have to give a "fern photo" a try one of these time I go on a hike.

This is a classic. It just has NZ written all over it, so common but so special. You've captured the colours and detail wonderfully.
