Red-billed gulls
Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus
Maori – Tarapunga (Ta-rar-pung-ah)

Yes, I know the lens is the wrong one to use, but it was all I had when out walking around the cliffs to the local beaches yesterday. And I couldn’t resist practicing on this seagull and others flying above us.

This is an juvenile red-billed seagull, one of the most common of New Zealand’s seagulls. We have many here in Auckland; I don’t think our beaches are ever empty of these gulls.

Red-billed seagulls have a white body, pearly grey back, black wing feathers tipped with white.
Adults have short red bills, bright red legs, feet and eye ring.
Immature have dark brown to brownish-red bills, purplish brown legs and feet, brown spots on back and wing spots.

Gulls can most often be seen at the beach, where they eat small marine creatures (hoppers, crabs and shellfish), but they also spend time at the dump – because they are good at scavenging food scraps that people throw away. Red-billed/Tarapunga are always hovering in the sky keeping a keen eye open for any food they can steal or scavenge.

In the distance you can see Tiritiri Matangi Island and right behind that is Little Barrier Island, and the water is the Hauraki Gulf.

hello Janice,
what a flies away! The image is perfect, very clear and the colors are good. Congratulation, Arnaud.

Hi Janice,
Nice capture you've stopped the action dead with the bird but still have a little motion in the background emphasising the speed of flight. Aren't the Mairangi Bay Gulls amusing. I was down there today with my duaghter and the gulls as usual were in good form. Very good in flight practice I find as they are very fast.
Cheers
Paul

Hello Janice,
A fine in-flihgt picture. Nice composition, pov, exposure. Sharp and crisp clear image. Regards,
JC

Splendid in-flight shot of this nice seagull, Janice!
I like the composition and the positioning of the subject in the frame a lot.
Also the exposure is nicely managed, the details are very sharp and the POV excellent.

Hello Janice,
Subject is very well framed, I like the inclusion of all three... sea, sky and land!
Good light on the bird, resulting in fine colours and good details!

Hi Janice,
A very nice in-flight on this Red-billed Gull. The light quality was excellent here. Good exposure has the colors and detail n the plumage looking great. Bird is frozen well with some nice panning blur on the backround.

Siempre que veo una gaviota en vuelo con esta punto de vista, me produce una agradable sentimiento de paz Janice.
Muy buena captura con agudeza y detalles en el plumaje, con una bonita composición sobre ese fondo muy bello.

Hello Janice,
Never mind the lens, this is a fine clear in-flight shot. This must be the Kiwi subspecies of the Ozzie Silver Gull

Hello Janice,

Nice picture of this gull. I know it is not easy to take flying bird on picture and you got a good shot here! The composition is well done by having it on the right side of the image. Even the landscape is interesting.. TFS,

Michel
