Cliff Erosion

We have had a lot of wet weather in Auckland lately. And with so much water falling down there have been major slips on the cliffs between the local beaches here. On the North Shore alone, where I live, four homes were under threat after slips eroded the front sections of the cliff top properties after a period of heavy rain.

The worst hit, a $1 million home, is now uninhabitable and a garage has had to be removed off another property because it was unsafe. It is estimated that cliffs here are eroding from two to six metres every century. This has been the case for the past 6-10,000 years.

Fortunately, even though there were slips on the cliffs close to where I live, none of then affected any homes. That is because there are no homes built on the cliff edges here. I take many of my native bush photos on these nature reserves over the cliff edges. But the ground is a bit unsafe in places though.

This is the latest slip between Murrays Bay and Mairangi Bay. The tree in the background are a row of Norfolk Pines growing on the beach reserve at Mairangi Bay.

Hi Janice,
Very well seen this colourful mess in Mairangi Bay. Sometimes we pay a high price for the unpredictable forces of nature.
Apart from that you could very well spot the structure and beauty of this old stones.
TFS and regards, Ruud

PIcture and note together do make a very interesting story. Thx for posting.

Hi Janice,
Interesting note about cliff slips and a very good shot of the result. Very good colors, details and composition.
Best regards, José M.

Nice composition with some beautiful colours and patterns in the rocks Janice.
We've had plenty of slips down this way too.
The coast road between here and Fox River can be scary in wet weather.
A few weeks ago I stopped to look at a dangerous looking overhang and a ppile of rocks suddenly came down on the road right in front of me.If I had kept driving they would have hit my car!
Some of the slips on the seaward side are scary too, with hundreds of metres below.

bonsoir JANICE
bravo pour cette érosion, cela donne de la couleur parfaite, bons détails, excellent travail
félicitations et merci du partage

Hi Janice,

This is a very interesting post, a very good note too. Composition is nice, but the light sky is a little too bright. I hope your house wonbe hit by such rocks!! :-o

TFS!

Pieter

Bonjour Janice
C'est vrai que ta prise de vue nous montre très bien l,érosion de ce rocher, les couleurs et les détails,le cadrage tout est joli.
Merci et au revoir....JP
Je suis a court de sourir a demain.

Hello Janice,
Very interesting post - the picture and the note. It's problem totally unfamiliar to me cause I live in totally flat place, but it seems to be a real problem in some parts of the world.
The picture is a really good ilustration to your story.
WELL DONE!

Hello janice,
I like both your photo and the interesting note.
This rock face looks fascinating, with its different colours: looks like some kind of iron-rich shale that must be more delicate and friable than it looks if it is so affected by heavy rain. Pity the property owners building on unsolid rock!
I like the colours and comp. of this shot and TFS it and the info.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Janice,
Image with content. Informative in a sense. Recently I saw a docu on TV in which they were looking for answers to the question why people are building their homes at risky places...and even pay high prices for it?

Hello my friend!

This is kind of picture which I like most! Geological landscape. Very interesting and very well taken. I love to search interesting minerals between rocks, so this is place for me :-) Great post Janice!

Hi Janice,
This is a different and very interesting post. This phenomenon is part of nature and we don't really think of talking about it... It happens in many countries very often. I know that here in Quebec many houses are built on cliffs like these and It happens from time to time. Your picture is very well detailed and well composed. We feel this great force of nature by looking at it. Well done with good notes. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Janice,
Nice illustration of the geological process. Concerning technique, I would say it's abit oversharpened. Excellent note!!!
Best greetings,
Michal
