Black-Backed Gull (larus dominicanus)( Maori: Karoro)

The only large gull in New Zealand. It has a wingspan of 120cm.

Here is the baby version of the Maori-speaking Gull. Kee-Ar-Or-Rar – Kia ora This one is still learning to say, “Kia ora”, New Zealand’s welcoming Maori phrase.

First year birds are brown and this is what this one is. I expect it was born last summer here in Auckland.

In the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown.

In the adult, the head, neck, underparts, rump and tail are white; the back and upper wings are black with a narrow white trailing edge. The bill is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill. The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.

The Southern Black-Backed Gull, Karora, (Larus dominicanus) is the largest of the three gull species that live in New Zealand. Black Backed Gulls live in all parts of the country from high country river basins to the urban refuse tip.

Very nostalgic beak :-) Sunbathing in shallow water, head full of thoughts. I'm very curious what is it thinking about? Fishes? Mussels? Or posing to another photo :-) I like this picture my friend! Karoro sounds superb.

Well, what a model! You have managed to get this young charachter to pose perfectly for you. Nice head turn to get a catchlight in the eye. The low POV is spot on and you have isolated it well from the BG. Good camera work MF! :-)

Excellent capture of this immature gull. Janice.
You present it well with good lighting, sharpness and comp.
I think this may be the same species as the Australian Kelp Gull that I tried to find without success when I was there a year ago.
So it's nice to see your pic.

This is truely a wonderful portrait of this seagull.
The light here is very beautiful and the colors are great.
Also the composition is very well managed, with asolutely nothing in the frame to distract the attnetion from your subject.
