Another macro practise. This fella was warm and cosy on the ceiling of my lounge until I eye-spied him and decided to use him as my macro model. Thanks for looking.

Praying Mantid Information

Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Mantodea

Identifying Features:
Appearance (Morphology)
• Three distinct body regions: head, thorax (where the legs and wings are attached), abdomen.
• Part of the thorax is elongated to create a distinctive 'neck'.
• Front legs modified as raptorial graspers with strong spikes for grabbing and holding prey.
• Large compound eyes on the head which moves freely around (up to 180°) and three simple eyes between the compound eyes.
• Incomplete or simple metamorphosis (hemimetabolous).

Adult Males and Females: Females usually have heavier abdomen and are larger than males.

Immatures: (different stages)A distinct Styrofoam-like egg case protects Mantid eggs throughout the winter. Up to 200 or more nymphs may emerge from the egg case. The nymphs look like adults except for size and the sexual definition. Coloration and patterns in the nymph stage may be different than the adult.

Food: Praying mantids are highly predacious and feed on a variety of insects, including moths, crickets, grasshoppers and flies. They lie in wait with the front legs in an upraised position. They intently watch and stalk their prey. They will eat each other.

Habitat: Praying mantids are often protectively colored to the plants they live on. This camouflage facilitates their predaceous behavior. Mantids are usually found on plants that have other insects around. Some mantids live in grass. Winged adults may be attracted to black lights in late summer and early fall.

Hello Pam!
Funny close up.Details,POV,framing,pose of mantis,lighting
and composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

C'est vraiment genial, on se sent vraiment observé par cet insecte. Pure et magnifique

Excellent, Pam.
That is one of the most unique and unusual portraits of Mantis religiosa I have ever seen. It perfectly demonstrates the "cunning" way of looking around that is typical for this very effective hunter species (more than 90% success rate in attacks, lions are said to have less than 30%).
And the boldly protruding antennae, one of them sharp and well focussed, the other one sticking right into the direction of the viewer - that is fine art of nature photography at its best.
Very dynamic composition, and all the rest technically perfect, too. Perfect notes, as always from you.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

macro pratise? macro perfect!
excellent portrait, pam! :-)
perfect timing on the "around-the-corner"-look,
good eyecontact and details.
well done & take care, thor.

CON-GRA-TU-LA-TIONS !!!! Et Merci du partage.
Fred.

Very nice shot Pam, I love your composition here and the pose of the mantids is wonderful. The shadowed corner gives this an artistic touch. I would consider boasting colour sat as greens always come up well. Nice work.

Hello Pam,
Superb shot of this curious mantis! The photo has got great sense of humour also. Colours, bg, focusing, pov, everything in the frame all are perfect. Thank you,
Ersin

Hi Pam,
This is an interesting and creative composition, I like it. Very sharp and detailed, with a great POV. Perhaps a teeny-tiny bit more DOF, as this cuties nose seems to fall-out just a bit. Great to see a macro from you..is this a trend? ;-}
Well done and TFS!

Privet Pam
The composition - in the left top angle is interestingly built. Good detailed elaboration. Almost human curiosity. Perfectly!

Spectacular image, Pam! The composition, POV, and detail are great. It looks like the mantis is peeking around a corner.

Considering it's a practice shot, it's pretty good. DOF could be wider but we all know that's difficult without a lot of light.
Interesting composition, very unusual.
I think I would have tried cloning out the black area in the top right corner.
Good result, though.
