What causes the sunrise and sunset to have so many colors?

When the sun is directly overhead, the sunlight has to only pass through a few miles worth of thick atmosphere. But when the sun is close to the horizon (at sunrise or sunset) the light goes a much longer distance through the atmosphere. This causes attenuation of the shorter wavelengths (blue - this is why the sky is blue at other times of the day) leaving only the longer wavelengths like orange and red to reach us. Having clouds in the sky and a variety of other atmospheric effects also contributes to the play of colors.

Hello Pam!

Magnificient sunset. I love photos of this kind - taken with very wide lens, panoramic and not too colorfull. This one is perfect. Calm ocean, beautifull sky and small rock which makes great composition with picture and frame. Something really refreshing in sunsets area.

Hi PAm. Folk tale this pic. Great atmosphere. Excellent coloured presentation. tfs. Stev

Hi Pam

Your title and photo makes me think of a song by Ben Jelen called "Setting of the Sun".

He sits beside her on the beach.
Staring across the waves as she's digging in the sand.
And looks around her,
And knows the crazy world would never understand.
And she says:
"Please would you find me, I've lost my way, please would you save me now".
"Please would you save me, I'll lose my way, please would you help me to escape".
And their answers lie in a setting sun.
And the reasons why will remain unknown.
'Cause we live our lives 'till we come undone.
We just have to believe.
We just have to believe.
We just have to believe.

Anyway, I’m not coming undone and I just love this shot especially that strategically placed isolated little island. It conveys a feeling of utter peace and tranquillity while it also creates a mood of mystery. The lovely colours and great details gave it a good degree of visual impact.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Pam,
Just pure wonderful. The simplicity of the composition is awesome. Really wonderful colors and texture in the clouds. The small island makes it all perfect. This photo radiates tranquillity. Just a minor nit, you have a small amount of barrel distortion visable.

Niek

Hi Pam,
I fully agree with the other this is a great image. You were right of taking a high aperture in order to gat as much light as possible. This is nice work!

Hi Pam

WOW...wow...did i say wow?
Now this is a change...
I don't recall having seen a landscap from you eversince i've joined TN, but looking at this one, i could say you were doing it for at least 10 years! :)
This is really superb!
It's so simple yet so effective!
All the colors and tones here look terrific and the panorama frame sure makes it look imense!
The effect created both on the water and the clouds by the rather long shutter speed (and probably wind, too) gave you that extra something here and it makes the composition outstanding!
Brilliant work!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Pam,
Such a simple composition but very effective. I think the obvious points here are the amazing sky and soft pastel colours, but what really makes this for me is the soft textures you've somehow captured, a very tranquil and beautiful image.
Cheers,
Adrian

I have never seen a sunset that color. It is a fascinating shot. The island focal point is so effective as is the panoramic format.

A very dramatic skyline, nice work!

Hello Pam,
fascinating, powerful image of splendid reduction.
Colours of sunset are often an invitation to show them in high saturation - but you and your Canon resisted any temptation, showing the ocean scene of a vast horizon with very airy and transparent colours, evoking a most pleasant feeling of freedom, silence, and light.
The very simple black top and bottom borders add to this monumental kind of minimalized concentration.
Beautiful work. Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Beautiful! The colours are fantastic, and the little rock makes a great little detail in the picture.
Nice composition. I really like colours that come out in the hours of sunset and sunrise. Its almost magic!
