[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Orewa Beach is a glorious stretch of white sand fronting the blue Hauraki Gulf, just 25 minutes north from Auckland, New Zealand. Extensive grassy reserves and a children's playground border the beach. Sometimes the sea murmurs, and sometimes it roars. Walk up to the lookout above the beach in the morning and see the sunlight break over the waves and cliffs.

This is where I took this picture – at the lookout on the northern cliff of Orewa Beach, above the beach. The tide is out and the sand is still wet.

Wheeling seabirds fly constantly out from the cliff where they nest and a flock of flying rock pigeons adds variety and interest. These feral pigeons roost and breed on these coastal cliffs all year round, laying eggs in every month of the year.

Here are some of these pigeons resting on the roots of native Pohutukawa tree [po-hoo-too-car-wa]. Slow growing, these pohutukawas can reach 15-20 metres in height. They often have long, twisted roots looking more like branches that help it cling to coastal cliffs. The pohutukawa can grow in the most inhospitable of rock crevices where continual lashings of salt-laden winds and drenchings of salt water are the norm.

I zoomed in as far as I could and this was the best I could do…

This is a beautiful composition supported by a great note.

Very well done and thanks for posting.

Interesting shot and note. I visited this spot several years ago, and wasn't aware of the "feral pigeons", though my recollection is that its a great place for pohutakawas and just splashing around on the beach.

Hi Janice
I enjoyed the note, and the flying rats are a nice bonus to the picture. I know all about just not having the "reach", even if I sometimes shoot at the equivalent of 900 mm in 35 mm terms. Somethings are sometimes just too far out to make the grade 100% - check some of my future postings on the Kalahari, and you wil see, there will be those that just did not make it, but that I like enough to post. This is what it is all about, shoot and post what you can, dream, anticipate, and one day!, the magic moment and the equipment will meet!

Love the way the flying rats! (nice description Callie) are framed within the old Pohutukawa roots

Janice, the branches themselves are great. The little bird is a nice detail.

Hi Jancie
Sometimes zooming right in you lose the perspective of the picture. I like that in this one you can see where the birds are in relation to the water and the vegetation on the cliff edge, which is also interesting. I love the varied colours of the birds too.
I often take a wide angled and close up shot of the same subject so I remember just where it was - particularly for birds. I've used some of the wide angle ones to show bird club members the area a bird is nesting in so I can direct them to the right tree.
