Kereru or Heniphaga novaeseelandiae

But did you know about pigeon pooh...

Kereru play a very important role in the New Zealand forest as seed dispersers. Since the extinction of the Moa, the kereru are the only birds left in New Zealand capable of swallowing and dispersing the large seeds of many of our native trees. Kereru can swallow fruit as large as a twenty cent coin. After the fruit has passed through its stomach the kereru drops the seed out coated in bird dropping compost.

This whole process helps the seed to germinate and become a seedling. Without the native pigeon trees such as the puriri, miro, karaka, taiaire and matai would become extinct in the wild.

Hi Jim,
Another good picture from last Sunday, however the sky is blowen out big time on this image, which is a shame as the pose is great. Plenty of mine came out under exposed and like this too due to the bad sky.

Thanks for sharing and hopefully next time we will have better light.
