NZ Ferns.

I haven’t posted a fern for quite a while, so here is another one for you.

New Zealand tree ferns are a very special plant. They have a certain charm about the way they grow. As the name suggests, tree ferns have a trunk which supports an amazing and beautiful crown of fronds. Some of these fronds can reach out to over four metres /12 ft.

I found these notes about NZ ferns written by Dennis Greville, a NZ author of many gardening books, which I have found very interesting.

Falling For Fronds
Dennis Greville

Ferns are ancient. In fact, they have their origins in the time before coal was formed, over 300 million years ago.

They evolved long before flowering plants came on to the scene and bear neither flowers nor seeds. Theirs is a quiet beauty. A beauty of form rather than colour.

Without flowers, it was long thought that ferns reproduced by some mysterious method. Today, we know that ferns bear spores on the backs of their leaves.

These spore sacks are sometimes protected by scales. Spores may be produced on all leaves or only some. They are tiny and dust-like; the number of spores from one frond amounting to millions.

The air, where ferns grow, is full of spores that are capable of surviving for very long periods before germinating. The dark brown and sometimes red, spore-bearing fronds of many ferns create an interesting contrast with the other green leaves.

Ferns are easy plants to grow and require little more than moisture and shelter from the burning sun and drying winds. Many ferns are especially suited to growing in low light conditions.

Very nice photo of fern Janice. Perfect composition, sharpness and light.

Hi Janice,
I love ferns, but the climate around where I live does not allow for many to grow. We have a few in our shade garden, but nothing like these beauties. Your notes on this subject are excellent.
