NEW ZEALAND’S FERNs

One of my sons has moved house again. He prefers to live in rural country areas, and this time their house is overlooking a bush of native ferns and Kanukas / Tea Trees. I took this photo from their balcony, looking down into the crown of this Tree Fern.

This is our New Zealand Silver fern. You can see small bits of white on the end of some of the fronds – they are the underside of the leaves – the silver sides showing as the wind was blowing them.

Ferns are everywhere in our New Zealand bush.

Fern "leaves" are referred to as fronds.
In the spring, fern fronds emerge from the trunk of the Tree Ferns in a special way.
They first begin to emerge and uncurl, and look like a snail's shell, and at this stage they are called croziers.
The process of croziers uncurling and expanding to form fronds is really fascinating to watch.
Usually it takes several weeks for the expansion of a crozier into a frond to be completed.

On tree ferns such as this one, the fronds are held at the top of the plant in a spreading manner.
They form by uncurling from the crown in the centre, which is at the top of the trunk.
The frond bases, where they join the top of the trunk, are called stipes .

The crown might be considered the most important part of the plant, since that is where all the leaf growth comes from. If it is destroyed, no more croziers will emerge from it, and the rest of the plant will eventually die.

I have posted 2 Workshops showing some more of the tree ferns growing in this bush. In one photo you can see the ugly trunks of the Kanuka trees – they have such twisted trunks and grow tall to reach the light.

Hi Janice
What a fantastic display to look out to everyday. This is a 'symphony in green'.
A lovely composition absolutely filled with the beauty of these ferns. The colours are perfectly natural. The DOF is great with every bit of detail visible on the plants, and the exposure was very well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Love the patterns that have been created here and the hint of silver showing through in the odd place, guess being a Kiwi really helps me to appriciate any picutre of ferns and this is a nice one.

Thanks Janice.
