NEW ZEALAND’S SILVER FERN (Cyathea dealbata)

This image shows the two sides of the frond of the Silver Fern. Also note the brown and white fronds in the background - they are the dead fronds of the Silver Fern as they have fallen onto the ground.

I’ve never seen ferns look like this – but I think the wind had weakened the stem of the frond and as it fell the wind seemed to have blown the leaves into these shapes. I thought it was quite artistic.

This fern was one of MANY growing on the property where one of my son’s live. I was so excited wandering around the bush yesterday (with my camera) and saw so many native New Zealand plants growing so well there.

The silver fern is becoming increasingly recognised overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand. The iconic silver fern, from the foetal koru to graceful frond, is a cornerstone of New Zealand culture — a symbol of national pride and as famous as the All Blacks, who wear the silver fern on their rugby shirts. The New Zealand Netball team is called The Silver Ferns. All our sporting teams wear the silver fern emblem when representing New Zealand.

The silver fern is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight.

This Amanita muscaria I posted yesterday was growing under Pine Trees (Pinus Radiata) at the top of the bush. The ground was covered in the attractive red capped mushrooms poking through the pine needles.

The WS photo shows my grandson Caleb and his mother walking sown the pathway through the centre of the bush. Soon the path gives way to just a cleared track that goes right to the water’s edge at Paremoreremo.

Hi Janice,
Ferns are rare for me and I like them. I don't knew that NZ has such a natural symbol: good option for a country.

Hi Janice
You have shown this fern so well with both sides of the leaves visible to reveal the origin of its name 'Silver fern'.
Nice composition and POV, very natural colours, perfect details, and excellent use of the fill-in flash thus managing the exposure perfectly.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
PS. Congratulations with the Super 14 with 2 New Zealand sides in the finals. They did great.

Good Morning Janice!
Great shot, it shows the "green and silver" of it very nicely :) It looks as if the fern leaves are turning into the light, creating this effect.
Well done mf and have a Great Week!
