This attractive symmetrical looking tree fern, Wheki-Ponga , is a favourite of mine. I love the crinkly sound the fronds make as you touch them, and they always seems to be a pretty green too. The hardiness of this tree fern make it a slow grower but it forms a very large trunk up to 60 cm in diameter.

This tree fern grows to 6 metres and naturally occurs throughout New Zealand from sea level to cold areas, at elevations up to 1000 metres, and is able to withstand 18-20°F. Its spreading fern-like, light green fronds grow well from the Auckland area south to Stewart Island, and Stewart Island is the most southerly island in NZ.

The bright green plant with the tiny leaves is Tanekaha , a medium-sized forest tree. It is a fast grower and tolerates sun and shade, which, together with its attractive whorled branching, make it a popular tree in cultivation.

Tanekaha is a very interesting plant. Its branches are very supple and do not break if bent over, making the wood ideal for any function involving bending, such as yacht masts and fishing rods.

All branches and branchlets on the tree are in whorls that diverge at wide angles from their point of origin.

Hello Janice, yesterday I pictured a fern too. (for my winter archives ;-) )

My kind of picture! Lovely composition, great details and subjects. I like frame also and of course your note full of Maori words :-) Last weekend I founded many similiar views in our forest. I liked it so much that I took five or six mosses and lichens species and now they live in big pot on my balcony :-) Start for new project - microforest on my balcony.

Another artistic picture from you Janice. You just have the eyes for these pictures. Very nice colours and the yellow branches in the background contributes nicely to the manin subject. Nice composition too.

I saw this yesterday but I'd run out of smileys, so I made a note to return. It's a lovely shot, the composition is excellent, very good detail and natural colours. A great note too, as always very educational and a great insight into the flora of that beautiful place you call home.
