Piha

Piha is internationally recognised as one of the top surfing places in New Zealand
and is especially popular with teenagers. The beach is notorious for rips and holes and is dangerous for swimming. It is a great spot, with a cafe area, picnic tables and a spacious beach, though if you are looking for a secluded spot to be alone, this is not the place to be on a hot summers day! It is not overcrowded, but is very busy. Climb Lion Rock for the views, although the upper part of the path is closed due to erosion.

As a surfing beach, there’s plenty of room and good waves. Surfing competitions are held in the summer, and it can be a very social place with live bands playing at the surf club. Piha Surf Lifesaving Club patrols the southern end and the United Surf Club patrols the northern end. A shop and a takeaway bar are near the Piha Club buildings. Piha lagoon is a short walk from the beach in front of the campground and is suitable for children. Parking can be a problem during long weekends, despite the designated areas at the southern and northern ends, the surf lifesaving clubs and on Marine Parade North. Toilets are beside the reserves, club buildings and at locations behind the beach.

The Waitakere Ranges Regional Park covers an area of approximately 18,000 hectares and comprises of 250 kilometres of walking tracks through native rainforest and bush, waterfalls and hosts an abundance of unique wildlife.

On the West Coast are the black volcanic sand beaches of Karekare, Piha, Bethells (Te Henga) and Muriwai with some of the wildest surf to be found anywhere in the world. The two natural harbours of Waitemata and Manukau have shores within the region and boast facilities for swimming, boating and fishing.

I have posted a photo in Workshop of Piha Beach and Lion Rock from the road way up the high on the hill coming into the beach

Aha, day by day, always better ;-) Monumental. Picturesque. Amazing. Breathtaking. I want to go to NZ!!!
But wait...do you see something oval, brown, on the right side of big rock, in sea? Isn't it Harvey Keitel's head?

Once more a great shot Jancie. I like the colours and the light. The shore in front gives depth to the picture. Bravo!

This is beautiful Janice, just beautiful. The ocean is so green.
A truly great image, land/seascapes are certainly your thing!
Well done and thanks for posting.

Great scene Janice! NZ never ceases to amaze! Colors are great and the photo is crisp and clear. Well composed. The crop in the top is a but too tight I am afraid. Good POV. Well done & TFS!

Pieter

What a stunning view, I love the WS post too.
Wonderful composition, thanks for posting.

A win!!! did I dream it........oh well, back to reality on Saturday!

Very dramatic looking beach and surf, especially with your note and the workshop photo with the wider view. Very great looking place, no wonder the surfers love it. I love the cloudy sky and the color of the waters, well done.

What a gorgeous beach. The lighting is fantastic, gives it a warm look. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place.
