Lion Rock, Piha Beach

For many hundreds of years the West Coast of Auckland was inhabited by the Maori who built fortifications on various headlands and islands such as Lion Rock (Whakaari) in Piha and The Watchman (Te Kaka Whakaara) in Karakare.

Lion Rock, which separates North and South Piha, is an island at high tide, and for centuries was a pa (fortified village) of the local Te Kawerau a Maki tribe. They called it Whakaari. It was once a key pa from which the Kawerau people defended the shoreline. They named the beach for the way the waves break around the rock. But they were driven out some time around the 1820s by Ngapuhi warriors from Northland who were armed with European muskets. The island is now in public ownership.

For many hundreds of years the West Coast was inhabited by the Maori who built fortifications on various headlands and islands such as Lion Rock (Whakaari) in Piha and The Watchman (Te Kaka Whakaara in Karakare.

The beaches around here feature black sand that has been formed by a magnetic iron oxide mineral that has eroded from volcanic ask further south and swept up the coast.

Piha is internationally recognised as one of the top surfing places in New Zealand and is especially popular with teenagers. The beach is notorious for rips and holes and is dangerous for swimming. Many have died after being swept of these rocks while fishing – but many other people keep going back to fish from there.

I was going to change this to Black’n’White, but decided that I liked the odd bit of blue in the sky and also the dirty colours of the green sea showing among the white surf. This bit of rock is at the base of the Lion Rock. You can see the Lion Rock in the Workshop that I have posted.

Woooow... Janice, it look like you are very close to the sea, I hope you are not... very well captured, the wave look so powerful. Excellent shot and the lighting is great on the sea, thanks for sharing my friend... :)

Great capture Janice with good timing on the wave. I would tilt the image CCW 1 degree and add a slight warming filter to this. Very nice work.

Hi Janice,

I agree with Stephen, the horizon look slightly tilted. The picture has a very strong composition, with the dark rock in the right middle and top. I am glad you didn't decide to go for B/W as the odd blue and green indeed make this picture more 'alive'.

You can really sense the storm. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Great shot Janice!
I love the stormy mood in this photo. Waves with cloudy sky and dark rock in BG make very special whole.
I like it very much.
WELL DONE!

Nah, the more waves the more fun fishing becomes. LOL
Excellent shot and a beautiful scene. I like your POV, showing the height of the waves.

So, NZ has got not only paradisaic face ;-) ? Really good landscape, dangerous and powerfull sea, grim Lion Rock. Waves, colours of sea and clouds are excellent. And as always Maori language - Whakaari sound superb!

Nice and interesting view ! Good POV and composition. The rock and waves are beautiful ! It is different of my mountains ;-) Thanks for sharing Janice.

Hello Janice!
Wonderful post.Moment you caught, colors, details and composition are excellent. Thanks for sharing.

I like this shot because it's almost monochrome, gives it a nice quality. Lots of detail in the water as well. I guess the only nit is the rock looks like it has been cut off on the right, I think it would have looked more balanced if a lower part of the rock was at the edge of the frame.

This shot looks so well captured Janice...!!!
The waves splashing against the rocks have come out well...

Good picture overall...

Regards
vipin :-)
