I’m a Toddler Gull
Larus dominicanus
Maori: Karoro

This is the toddler version of the Maori-speaking Black Backed Gull - Karoro.

First year birds are brown with small amounts of white

In the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown, like this one. I expect it was born last summer here in Auckland.

By the third year the body is off-white and back and upper wings are brown and black.

In the adult, the head, neck, underparts, rump and tail are white; the back and upper wings are black with a narrow white trailing edge. The bill is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill. The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.

The Southern Black-Backed Gull Karora (Larus dominicanus) is the largest of the three gull species that live in New Zealand. Black Backed Gulls live in all parts of the country from high country river basins to the urban refuse tip.

Hello Janice,
I wonder if this one year old Southern Black-Backed Gull Karora (a mouthful)caught this big fish in front of him.
The image is nicely composed with an appropriate low point of view.

Hi Janice,

I always notice gulls too. Your image was captured very well. The gull looks a bit rough. But then gulls don't necessarily have an easy life. We saw one in an area we frequent, which couldn't walk well. Thankfully, a person who lives in a nearby house took it away to a place that rehabilitates aquatic birds. Nicely done. TFS.
