Another one from the archives. The Silvereye have been missing from my garden for sometime now while the breeding season is in progress, but tonight I had 4 playing in the tree outside my dining room window. I hope this is a sign that they are due to return soon.

Birds in Cities

Birds like to live in back gardens because although they can live on window ledges and roof tops, even city birds often prefer trees. Trees and shrubs help birds to hide from their enemies. They also give them a place to nest, and trees often produce food in the form of seeds, leaves, flowers, nectar and berries.

By planting lots of different trees and shrubs, different kinds of birds will be attracted to your backyard. Any garden can be made attractive to wildlife.

You can make sure that birds in your garden have food all year round by carefully choosing plants which fruit and flower at different times of the year.

If you want to plan which trees to plant in your garden, look at www.doc.govt.nz and then go to Native Species/Tree Planting for Native Birds.

To have fruits and seeds in your garden all year round, plant 'Puriri', 'Tarata' and 'Titoki'. To make sure there is nectar for birds all year round, plant 'Fivefinger', 'Northern Rata' and 'Kohuhu'.

Some non-native trees can be planted in your garden to provide extra food, especially over the winter. Crabapple and tree lucerne are good food supplies.

What foods do native birds prefer?

You can increase the chances of seeing your favourite birds in your garden by planting the plants they most like to feed from. For example,

· The tui, bellbird, silvereye and kaka all enjoy nectar.
· The wood pigeon and kaka feed on fruit and berries.
· Silvereye, grey warbler and fantail are insect eaters.

By making your garden attractive, non-native birds such as the chaffinch, greenfinch, goldfinch, starling, yellowhammer, blackbird, house sparrow, hedge sparrow and song thrush are also likely to visit.
