White Peafowl / Peacock
Pavo cristatus
Family: Phasianidae

Going through my folders and I came across this White Peafowl. I had quite a bit of trouble photographing this unusual coloured Peafowl as it was so white. My camera wouldn’t focus on it too well; some of my shots didn't come out to sharp.

He’s quite dirty too – you can’t hide that on a white Peahen!!

Besides the India Blue, whites are the most well-known peafowl types. Contrary to popular belief, whites are not albinos, because their eyes are blue, not pink.

Type of mutation: The white is a colour mutation, and although it can carry other genes, such as the black shoulder and white-eyed, they are not visible because of its completely white colour.

Peacock Coloration: Males are, as their name implies, completely white. Faint eyespots can be distinguished in the train by a thin layer of off white that surrounds the ocelli. The actual seeing eyes of the birds are blue.

Peahen Coloration: Hens are completely white, with blue eyes.

Peachick Coloration: When first hatched, the chick is yellow in colour with white wings. White chicks are hard to sex until about two years of age when the male will developed wispy tail coverts, because the bird does not change colour much in its lifetime, and the male and female look so similar. Chicks born at the same time can sometimes be sexed by the length of their legs. Males often have longer legs than the females.

Origin: It is speculated there may be a few white peafowl bred naturally in India. White was one of the first variations to be discovered and made popular, and has been around for many years.

Do they breed true? : Yes, white bred to white will produce 100% white chicks. White is an incomplete dominant gene, so when a white is bred to a non-white the offspring will be split to white, and this will show itself by small white patches on its primary wing feathers.

Hi Janice!
Very good portrait. White peacock looks better than colorfull one :-) Its tail's feathers look very 'industrial' - great composition of shapes. Vigilant face is also very nice. Very colorfull note also :-) Great work my friend!

Hi Janice,
I've never seen one before, it looks like somebody sprayed a normal Peacock with liquid nitrogen .. Nicely framed shot and very interesting note, a great post.

Hello Janice,

Superb picture of this white pheasant! Here, you managed the white so well! I'm impressed! You mastererd the dof, pov and composition! The exposition is well dosed too!

TFS,

Michel

Very good portrait.

Gorgeous Peacock Janice, the POV is well chosen plus the exposure is very nice showing excellent tonal ranges on the whites. :)

Hello Janice,
I see this white peafowl in some zoos, and are curious to see. For this coloration, a very nicer picture; is not overexposed and has good details; composition is great.

Hernán

Hi Janice
Good detail, colours and sharpness. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV and composition.

Thanks for posting, have a great week.

Hi Janice,
Amazing! I have never observed one of these in person. A difficut exposure with all that white. A great job. Great color and detail shown in the plumage. Nice frame filling composition.
Scott

I've never seen a white one of these beautiful birds. I love the "Julia Roberts" reference, it made me laugh. The pure white feathers must have been very hard to capture, you've done so well though Janice, and your note as usual is very informative. Excellent work, TFS.

Hi Janice,
What an incredible capture.
Very original POV and composition of this white peahen.
It just looks fantastic. Everything is perfect.
TFS. : )

What a bother to be white and unable to keep oneself tidy!
We have plenty pea-cocks/pea-hens in India, but this one is quite new to me, Janice.
Very well presented and documented.
TFS.

Great shot! Well composed, and I like your POV. Sharpness, detail, and exposure are very good. Excellent note as always..
Well done Janice!

Hi Janice
What an excellent capture of this lovely bird. I can understand the problems you must have experienced in shooting it. The cameras auto focus sensors works by reading contrast in the subject. The difficulty for you was in the fact that if you pointed it to the white, the camera would have gone crazy focusing in and out. If you pointed it to the darker (dirtier) areas the white would have burnt out. So this is a great, well balanced result.
The details are ever so sharp in the facial area. The composition is stunning, the BG is superb with those amazing patterns created by the OOF tail feathers, and the exposure was brilliantly managed.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Janice, this is very nice.

Despite the white feathers, you did really great with exposure.

Excellent composition and pov. I enjoy sharpness too.

Hi Janice,

I remember this beauty. This composition with the OOF tail feathers are very good. It really makes the head stand out. Very well done.

I love it Janice! He looks like he could be used in a wedding. I find White, and red for some reason hard to photograph. A+ Janice :)

I think you hit the nail on the head. Shooting white birds in sunlight can be very difficult. I think the exposure is perfect and you couldn't have done better with the composition. Very nice shot.

Hello Janice,
Your picture caught my eyes and I admire it. It seems to me normal to have the tail of the bird a bit out of focus, while having the head in focus.
About the tail: my opinion as a birder is this large tail like a fan, proudly displayed by your subject, makes it a male, not a female.
Regards,
Florin

hehe, he looks more like a turkey getting ready for christmas.
he really should have taken a bath before the photo-shooting.
excellent capture, janice! :-)
superb pov and composition -
i really like the focus on the face and the tailfeathers as
a blurred white bg.
well done & take care, thor.

Hi Janice:

Nice capture! I think he is looking at you.

Hi Janice,
