Rauparaha's Copper (Lycaena rauparaha)

Distribution: New Zealand

Remarks: Wingspan 25-31mm; this attractive insect is predominantly a coastal butterfly. In the North Island it ranges down the whole West Coast whilst in the east it can be found from the Bay of Plenty northwards. In the South Island it is restricted to Golden Bay, Tasman Bay, Kaikoura and certain parts of Canterbury. The typical habitat of this butterfly is coastal dune areas with the characteristic vegetation of marram and lupin.

Eggs are laid singly on the under surface of the foodplant, are bun shaped and have a honeycomb pattern of ridges.

Larvae feed on Muehlenbeckia complexa. The pale velvety green larvae have the appearance of green slugs. They overwinter on the foodplant continuing to feed through the winter months though at a somewhat slower rate.

Pupae have an overall pale pinkish brown colour. The cremaster is attached to a pad of silk with a silken girdle across the middle. Pupation takes place beneath the host plant usually in a rolled leaf or amongst the leaf litter or under stones.

Te Rauparaha (c 1768-1849) was one of the greatest Mäori fighting generals of his time. A short powerful man of high intelligence, he was chief of the small Ngäti Toa tribe. His mother was Ngäti Raukawa, born in the Waikato, near Lake Karapiro. After campaigning in the Waikato and Taranaki regions for many years, he decided to move Ngäti Toa people to Kapiti Island in the 1820's mainly because of serious conflicts and enemies he had with other Waikato and Taranaki iwi.

A butterfly, Rauparaha’s Copper (Lycaena rauparaha), was named in his honour. It lives in coastal regions is a golden coppery colour and has a wing span of between 25 and 30 mm. One explanation for the name is that the coastal strip along which the Mäori warrior moved so often between Taranaki and Wellington was the butterflys most heavily populated habitat.

Hi Pam,
Nice work, really nice!
Powerfull photos!
Thank you
regards
Tomas

Excellent work Pam. I really love the different poses where you show us the underside as well as the top of the butterflies. Also you have young ones as well as old. My personal favorite is the one in the lower right corner which has a perfect pose and composition. All frames have great sharpness and colours. Really a nice set to look at and followed by a very good note.

at first i thought these were 9 different
butterflies..but no, these are 9 different
great poses of one and the same kind.
every small frame is perfect - you should
be awarded at least 9 points - one for
every little beauty.
well done & take care, thor.

Hi Pam
Excellent collage very well prepared and presented. This is truly beautiful work. Each little photo is a masterpiece in its own right and the details, BG's, and lighting for each and every one is quite amazing.
Out of curiosity, I do notice two distinct colour patterns though. From left to right, top to bottom, photos 2,3,6 & 8 have somewhat different markings compared to the rest. Could this be a male vs female thing, does it have anything to do with age, or is it just variation within the specie?
You have basically shown these butterflies from almost every possible angle in this very colourful assembly. No's 2 & 9 are my clear favourites.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

This is great Pam. You've really done your homework. Well done on capturing and getting an ID on this one. It is mentioned briefly in my book, but no pictures. The most similar I have is the common copper. A very nice composition and excellent notes.
Cheers, Steve

Hi Pam,

wonderful presentation of this colourful collection of shots, showing the b-fly in all possible angles. Each of the shots is very good. Using the one with largest DOF, where the b-fly stands out least from the BG, as the middle piece of the collage directs the eye outward and around in a circle.

The last one bottom right is my clear favourite, it is very dynamic and it seems it is just before take-off.

No.1 and 3 also stand out for me, maybe because both have their body oriented towards the outside of the circle.
No. 1 is nicely showing the head though the BG is a bit cluttered.
No. 3 is unusual with the grass infront, but this gives depth to the pic and accentuates the diagonal orientation of the b-fly.

Excellent collage!

Regards,
Gabi

Hi Pam,
Excellent, I like all the shots and the presentation is first class. I think even the choice of positions is perfect, the centre picture wouldn't look right anywhere else. Great work!
Cheers,
Adrian

For me it is difficult to capture a butterfly these days and Pam have many for a superb collage ! I am jalous ;-) I appreciate the quality and it is interesting to compare the different POV... Congratulations Pam and thanks for sharing this great work.

A lot of work went into this fantastic collage, each frame has excellent quality showing very nice exposures. Frame 9 bottom lower right would have to be my favorite, it shows excellent pattern on the wings plus I like the POV. Nicely done. :)

very good treatment and collage, and many of the 9 photos composing it look excellent. Well, i have to admit that i don't like the one on the upper right as much as the other ones, because of this grass in front of the butterfly, but it doesn't reduce the value of your work in any way. Congratulations !
