Oystercatcher

With its long, probing beak, the oystercatcher feeds on mussels exposed at low tide, using its long red bill to hammer on the shells to split them. It is one of the few seabirds that can dislodge a limpet.

This big, handsome black and white bird makes her nest among the pebbles and rocks above the high tide line. Her nest is called a scrape because it is merely a small hollow scraped out of the sand and pebbles. The eggs look just like the pebbles around the nest, so are very hard to find - this is the way she hides her eggs. The chicks are also speckled and hard to spot on the seashore.

While sleeping the Oystercatcher hides its beak under its feathers. These birds will mob a predator vigorously driving the predator away before it finds the Oystercatchers eggs.

For oystercatchers, an ideal nesting place is a sand or shingle bank, out of reach of the waves yet within easy reach of feeding.

Another very beautiful bird-shot from you!
I really like the pose you captured this cute oystercatcher in - with one leg up :)
Also the low POV is great, the DOF excellent and the sharpness of the details impeccable.
Very well done - as usual!
Cheers and TFS

Nice capture, Pam!
This is a bird that I missed in Ozzie but your shot of this juvenile is a fine capture, sharp and well presented and is something of a compensation for me.
Well done and best wishes for 2007!

Hi Pam,

This is one of the birds I would still like to take a picture of. You captured it well in difficult light. The composition is perfect, well cropped, as well as the focus. Very well done.
