The Redwoods and Whakarewarewa Forest at Rotorua

Whakarewarewa Forest is one of Rotorua’s most spectacular natural assets. It is famous for its magnificent stand of towering Californian Coastal Redwoods and is just five minutes drive from the city centre.

288 hectares of the Whakarewarewa Forest, known simply as The Redwoods is managed by the Rotorua District Council. This area, recognised for the diverse range of exotic trees and flourishing native undergrowth, has been set aside for recreation.

The most popular of all the walks is the Redwood Memorial Grove track where you can take a leisurely walk under the towering Californian Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) which were planted in 1901.

These towering trees stand at approximately 60 metres tall and reach 163 centimetres in diameter. The Grove is dedicated to the memory of the men and women of the New Zealand Forest Service who died in the two World Wars.

A superb POV giving a really deserving majestic feel to this wonderful old tree. nice sharp detail and good colour saturation.

a fitting POV for this Giant of the forest, it is very impressive. Excellent DOF and detail at f/6.3 all the way up...

Those trees are impressive! I think that we don't have them here in Quebec but I know that there are some in other provinces of Canada. They are superb giants and this POV makes us appreciated their majestic height. Well seen!

Hello Janice,
Such a size after 'only' 100 years!
The Aukland climate must be very suitable for the Californian Redwood.
I like the POV that really gives a fine imression of the statureof this massive tree.

So today we both post Redwoods..yours in colour and mine grouped in B&W...Interesting how they compete for the "tallest" here in the US as well as Oz and NZ...other famous competitors include eucalyptus.

Oddly enough as much time as I spent in the redwoods and loved this type of classic shot..I only have one or two and they do not have nearly the grandness of this one...

Nicely captured and presented. Your image conveys the majestic size of these giant trees.

This is just one more example of how similar the climate of NZ is to the northern Pacific coast of the 'lower 48' of the western United States.

I was here in 2005 and have tried together with my wife to embrace such a tree. This succeeded with his two of us not. When I see the photo back then I think more then 3 adults. They can make it. But there is one bigger and that's The Tane Mahuta. Anyway this are also very big trees. And the wood is also magnificent. Your tree gives me again the feeling that I was again overthere. When I look back in my archive I made almost a copy of the same tree (-: A beautiful shot of a beautiful tree.
