Huka Falls

The Huka Falls is New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. The thundering Huka Falls provides a fantastic photo opportunity - more than 220,000 litres of water tumbles over the cliff face per second! Located in Wairakei Tourist Park, just a short drive north of Taupo, there is an Information Centre located by the falls and several viewing platforms provide excellent vantage points.

The unique blue colour of the water is due to the very clear water reflecting blue light. The air bubbles in the water intensify the blue colour.

The water temperature varies from between 22șC in the summer to 10.5șC in the winter.

The volume of water passing over the falls varies between 32 and 270 cubic metres per second. Depending on the flow, the falls fluctuate in height from 7 to 9.5 metres.

During the 1930s a small hydro-electric power station was constructed just below the falls. It supplied power to the Wairakei Hotel until the mid 1950s when it was replaced by the municipal electricity supply.

At the base of the falls there is a dangerous undertow caused by the falling water plunging deep into the pool.

Pam, I can "hear" the noise produced by the water.

Very nice capture. It's simple and effective. Great to see so much water flowing down.

HI Pam,
Nice shot.
Some how in a photo they don't look as big as the falls are in real life. Don't know why.
I love the blue water.
:)

Great composition with splendid details Pam. I like this landscape. Good Job! Have a nice weekend.

Hi Pam!

Great shot - it shows us very well power of nature. I like white masses of water and few dark rocks around it. Very dynamic photo.

Hello Pam, this brings back memories to a visit to this place in 1975. It is now time to plan a trip to the North Island in Sept 2006!!.

Another great capture with the photograph selling both the power and the beauty of the falls. Are you on holidays again?

Regards

John P
